You need to get speaking French in minimal time?
Tired of feeling embarrassed what to say, or thinking you’re not saying it « right »?
Here’s how to:
Step 1 – Use ‘je’ asap
Je or J’
- j’ai
- je fais
- je vais
- je suis
- je dois
- je sais
- je peux
- je veux
- Je pense
Step 2 – Go for « il, elle, on »
Je fais => Il fait, elle fait, on fait.
This will allow you to speak French in a wide range of situations without thinking twice about the verb conjugation.
Except:
j’ai => il a, elle a, on a
je suis => il est, elle est, on est
Step 3 – Use « et toi? » or « Et vous ? »
Divert the attention. The person will answer with a « je » answer so using your knowledge from step 1.
Step 4 – Use past (passé composé) with « je » asap
Using your knowledge of j’ai/je suis to get using past tense asap.
J’ai + mangé
J’ai + dit
J’ai + vu
Je suis + resté
Je suis + allé
Step 5 – Use past with « il, elle, on »
Il a + mangé
Elle a + mangé
On a + mangé
Il est + resté
Elle est + restée
On est + resté
Step 6 – Use past with « ils, elles »
Statistically, the ils, elles conjugation is the most random of all.
So learn it separately.
Also there is a key distinction between the sounds of:
Ils ont = they have / ilZon/
Ils sont = they are /ilSon/
This also applies to past:
Ils ont mangé
Elles ont mangé
Ils sont restés
Elles sont restées
Step 7 – Use past with the most useful irregular verbs
– j’ai pris, il a pris, elle a pris, on a pris, ils ont pris, elles ont pris
– j’ai vu, il a vu, elle a vu, on a vu, ils ont vu, elles ont vu
Step 8 – Learn the most common « ils, elles » conjugation for irregular present
Notably:
- ils prennent, elles prennent / apprennent / comprennent
- ils viennent, elles viennent / reviennent
- ils tiennent, elles tiennent / retiennent
- ils boivent, elles boivent
- ils doivent, elles doivent
- ils savent, elles savent
- ils écrivent, elles écrivent
Step 9 – Trust your listening
Figuring out the « tu » and « vous » forms will come naturally.
