It really comes down to three things:

- Confidence: Being a fluent French speaker means you have the confidence to express yourself in French. You don’t hesitate too much, and words come up easily. The same way you breathe without thinking about it, being fluent means things are just on autopilot. It has become an unconscious process through repetition.
- Observation: Being fluent in French means you have carefully observed French speakers: not only the way they speak and the sounds they make, but also their body language, the way the intonation in their voice changes. Anyone can spot a different intonation, no matter what the language is. You just know it’s different from English or any other language. Observing means you are able to act as if you were already interacting with French speakers, and using self role play as an observation technique.
- Purpose: Becoming a fluent French speaker is a process that can be broken down into steps – and there are shortcuts to it. But this will require an investment of your time and energy. In order to keep things fresh and keep that motivation alive, you will need to define your why as soon as possible in the process. Most of my students have had a conscious or unconscious reason to become fluent in French. Think about your partner, your children, your life in France or another French speaking country.
Think about it as a valuable investment of your time and energy, something that brings value to your life, and improve your quality of life.
