Case study: French movie trailer ‘Alice et le maire’

Remember, you don’t need to understand everything.
You want to grasp words here and there that help you make sense of what’s happening.

Watch it once.

I like this trailer because the situation is pretty clear: an old man and a young girl. He’s a politician and she’s new and naive. They seem to get closer over the duration of the trailer.

Ask yourself:
– which parts are you confident about?
– which parts are you kind of sure about?
– which parts you were completely lost? (and it’s ok!)

Here’s what an intermediate French student will probably be confident about:
– vous connaissez
– vous êtes un homme politique
– vous êtes le maire de Lyon
– exposer ma situation
– j’ai toujours eu des idées
– je me suis réveillé
– comment vous vous appelez
(…)
– on (nous) attend
– à tout le monde
– il remplace
(…)
– scandale
– pétition
(…)
– modeste
– ça va, les notes
– cour? cours? court?
– prend? prende? prendre? des notes
(…)
– influence
– je suis désolée
– je te remercie
(…)
– on va écrire
– tous les deux
– le discours?
– de ma vie

And that’s enough to get you through the trailer.
All you need from there is to:
1. use your common sense
2. let your brain do the connections without needing to ‘understand everything’, which is an unrealistic goal that will frustrate you in the long run and make you lose motivation.

Bon courage 😉
